Voices of birds

I've been concentrating on field recordings for the California Academy of Sciences. I posted some pictures of a parabolic microphone set up that I'm using. The idea is to record eight channels of sound for the planetarium dome in an immersive surround setting.

Six of the channels are in a normal theatrical surround pattern, while two channels from the parabolic microphone are "travelers", which means they can map to an image that's moving across the dome.

That means that all the channels are recorded at the same moment. So, if a bird were to fly through thick forest you would hear, not only the surrounding forest but the echoing of the bird as it moves through it.

If you are interested to know the technical details, feel free to email me and I'll give you the scoop!

As you can see, there are field binoculars attached to a motor drive so that you can aim the microphones as well as a GoPro camera mounted to the front. All in all, it's quite easy to set up and use. I had a chance to hear the results in the planetarium, and it was quite realistic.
